Numerical Study of Shear and Extensional Inelastic Contraction Flows

چکیده

This study investigates the numerical solution of viscous sharp contraction flow using a time-step Taylor-Galerkin-pressure correction finite element method (T-G/P-C). Such complex problfem displays start-up, 4:1contraction creeping flow, shear viscosity and extensional responses. Here, inelastic shear-extensional model is proposed with single power-index response identical in extension, namely Fit-I. In this context, extension rate are defined by depending on second third invariants deformation tensor. Employing (T-G/P-C) combining representation to treat such problem gives novel scenario. The interesting lies determining efficient effect relevant parameters solutions components, convergence issues. Attention also paid impact these issues

Numerical prediction of extensional flows in contraction geometries: hybrid finite volume/element method

We examine the flow of viscoelastic fluids with various shear and elongational properties in axisymmetric and planar 4:1 contractions, under creeping flow conditions. Particular attention is paid to the influence of elongational viscosity upon vortex enhancement/inhibition. Simulations are performed with a novel hybrid finite volume/element algorithm. The momentum and continuity equations are s...

Numerical Simulation of Non-Newtonian Inelastic Flows in Channel based on Artificial Compressibility Method

In this study, inelastic constitutive modelling is considered for the simulation of shear-thinning fluids through a circular channel. Numerical solutions are presented for power-law inelastic model, considering axisymmetric Poiseuille flow through a channel. The numerical simulation of such fluid is performed by using the Galerkin finite element approach based on artificial compression method (...

Experimental and Numerical Study of Perforated Steel Plate Shear Panels

Thin perforated Steel Plate Shear (SPS) Walls are among the most common types of energy dissipating systems. The applied holes reduce the shear strength of the plate and allow to decrease the profile size of the members at the boundary of the panel when these systems are used in the typical design of structures. On the other hand, the different fracture locations of these panels are visible whe...

The effect of confinement-induced shear on drop deformation and breakup in microfluidic extensional flows

Droplets of de-ionized water and four aqueous surfactant solutions were generated in oil using a microfluidic flow-focusing device. The morphological developments of the drops in extensional flow and confinement-induced shear flow at various extension rates were studied using a hyperbolic contraction. This novel approach to droplet deformation within a microfluidic device allowed the probing of...

Chaotic boundaries of nematic polymers in mixed shear and extensional flows.

Chaotic orientational dynamics of sheared nematic polymers is documented in laboratory experiments and predicted by Doi-Hess kinetic theory for infinitely thin rods. We address robustness of rheochaos when simple shear is modified by a planar straining flow, and the macromolecules have finite aspect ratio. We predict persistence of sheared chaotic response up to a threshold straining flow stren...
